    The task of editing and publishing such a corpus, and of identifying the authentic Galenic texts within it, is a hugely challenging one, and the volume edition reissued here, edited by Karl Gottlob Kuhn () and published in Leipzig . Galen's treatises on the classification and causation of diseases and symptoms are an important component of his prodigious oeuvre, forming a bridge between his theoretical works and his practical, clinical writings. As such, they remained an integral component of the medical teaching curriculum well into the second millennium.

This monumental volume edition of his complete works by Karl Gottlob Kühn (), originally published in Leipzig between and and reissued here, has never yet been rivalled. Galen was undoubtedly one of the most important physicians in antiquity. He left a voluminous work which was edited by numerous scholars. The most capacious edition was done by Karl Gottlob Kühn between and , which is, besides other more recent editions, the major source for this work. Galen deals in his works with all aspects of medicine and with philosophy.

Karl Gottlob Kühn of Leipzig (–) published an edition of of Galen's writings between and His edition, which is the most complete, although flawed, consists of the Greek text with facing-page Latin translation. The text and translation are mainly taken from the edition of Chartier —39, Paris.

Kühn's edition runs to 22 volumes, index. Since feeling and voluntary motion are peculiar to animals, whilst growth and nutrition are common to plants as well, we may look on the former as effects of the soul and the latter as effects of the nature. And if there be anyone who allows a share in soul to plants as well, and separates the two kinds of soul, naming the kind in question vegetative, and the other sensory.
